Repin’s erste weithin anerkannte arbeit nach abschluss der kunstschule , barge haulers an der wolga wurde sofort von kritikern gelobt . Obwohl seine soziale botschaft in der darstellung der unmenschlichen arbeitsbedingungen der lastkahntransporter glasklar war , die arbeit wurde von der gekauft Emperor’s zweiter sohn , großherzog wladimir alexandrowitsch , und in ganz europa als beispiel russischer realistischer malerei ausgestellt . Die arbeit war sehr beliebt , und es wurde in ganz russland parodiert , und als grundlage für politische cartoons verwendet . es war auch die inspiration für das beliebte russische lied “ das lied der wolga-bootsfahrer . ”
